However, it’s unlikely that you’ll be tall enough to reach the books on the very top shelf, so how can you go about doing so without much struggle? With the use of a sliding library step ladder, naturally!
These handy ladders have been in use since the Victorian era, first coming to the fore in the mid-1800s and were a serious staple for some of the wealthiest homeowners of the time.
The Victorian iterations of these ladders were often more like step ladders and were shorter than the longer-form library ladders you’re more likely to see in 21st century homes… but they did come with all sorts of stunningly intricate carvings to really up the ante and their base was typically wider for added support.
These days, library ladders are typically longer, stretching from floor to ceiling and attached to a rail so they can be slid along the length of the wall with ease, helping you reach all your favourite books with no trouble whatsoever.
And, despite the fact that they’re known as library ladders, don’t let this put you off from installing them anywhere at home where they might serve a practical function. The pantry and the kitchen are obvious places, for example, if you have high shelving areas you need to access regularly.
You also don’t need to have the rolling function if you don’t want to and you can design your ladders to suit any style aesthetic you have.
